Historical cinema is long-winded and dull? Not when Paweł Maślona gathers a star-studded cast for a work depicting the period preceding the Kościuszko uprising. When "Kos" returns to Poland, he does not come back alone; instead, he has former slave Domingo in tow. Together, they plan to convince the estates of the need for a joint uprising against the occupier. The cunning Russian cavalry captain Dunin is on his heels however and intends to neutralise him.
In a cleverly edited blend of chase, intrigue, hide-and-seek and sabre-rattling, Maślona does not engage in hero worship, instead using the story as a starting point for a tongue-in-cheek Tarantino-style screen patchwork. Popular success might not provide the material for a school curriculum, it does however offer the best entertainment, this year scooping the main prize at the Gdynia Film Festival.
