13-year-old Marija is sent by her mother to live with her grandmother in a desolate small town in an industrial provincial town. Tall, slim and with a slightly crooked gait, she is bullied by the other girls at school. Kristina in particular has it in for her, that is until a heated argument unexpectedly results in a close friendship. Together, the two apply to a dubious modelling agency that promises the girls a way out of their dreary reality. And yet the road ahead is marked by dangerous beauty ideals, extreme diets and toxic relationships. Between the thumping beats and epic music video sequences, Marija and Kristina lose themselves in dreams of success. Director Saulė Bliuvaitė fulfilled this very dream herself with her hip yet brutally honest debut work, one which saw her take the Golden Leopard at this year’s Locarno Film Festival.
