Ábel should actually be studying for his school leaving exams, and yet his thoughts are focused solely on the love of his life Janka. When he fails the oral history exam in front of his teacher Jakab, an inconspicuous detail turns into a political issue: Jakab questions the nationalist pin on Ábel's blazer. Fearing his arch-conservative father, Ábel invents a story that soon takes on uncontrollable dimensions. A journalist senses a story, and the topic becomes a nationwide scandal. With EXPLANATION FOR EVERYTHING, Gábor Reisz offers up a clever, sharp-witted political satire about the political division of a nation. With subtle humour and a feel for complex characters, he demonstrates how personal conflicts get caught up in the maelstrom of political conflict and, in the process, the truth falls by the wayside. A film that reflects the climate of a polarised society while, at the same time, posing universal questions about identity and truth. After a brilliant start at the Venice Film Festival the film, shot with virtually no budget at all, soon became an international hit.
