THE TRAP

Nadejda Koseva
BG/DE, 2023, 95 Min

The ragged Yovo lives alone amongst the spellbinding landscapes of an idyllic river delta and yet is by no means lonely - he selflessly tends to the surrounding wilderness. When however an investor threatens the fragile ecosystem, Yovo bares his claws.

Yovo repeatedly clears away the rubbish that others leave behind. If necessary, he dumps it in front of their door - even if the door happens to belong to the local mayor. He, in turn, needs Yovo's help: local businessman Gluhov wants to entice a French investor with a wild boar hunt in the hope that he will invest in what is a structurally weak region. And only the old man has a suitable dog for the job.

He finds himself banging his head against a brick wall with Yovo however - since the hunt is to take place on Easter Saturday and out of season, a large wild boar would have to be released especially for this purpose and, above all, since the investors intend to construct a depository for nuclear waste in the midst of this idyllic landscape.

We bear witness to Yovo's courageous rebellion, against people who believe that everything comes down to money, in wide-format images that both acoustically and visually celebrate the beauty of a nature that is worth fighting for.
