The movie is based on real events that took place during the so-called migration crisis in Europe in 2015. The co-author of the script, journalist Momir Turudić, was working with refugees as a Farsi interpreter at the time. The story of a young Afghan woman learning of her brother's death, on the one hand, reflects the complexity and drama of the refugee situation, and on the other hand, looks like a new version of Sophocles' Greek tragedy Antigone, in which a determined princess from Thebes buries her brother in defiance of the king's ban. However, unlike the myth, in Vuk Ršumović's movie there are no villains. The female protagonist is confronted not by a cruel king, but by an indifferent bureaucratic system built on the care of papers, not people. The same system also pressures its own representative, the interpreter, who takes Fereshteh's situation to heart and serves as a conduit between the two cultures — and not just for the plot, but for the audience as well. DWELLING AMONG THE GODS brings the classic theme of Antigone into the present — the conflict between the moral law and the state law remains relevant to this day.
