PELIKAN BLUE

László Csáki
HU, 2023, 80 Min

Imagine; you are finally allowed to travel and yet you have no money. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in Hungary, three young people forge tickets for their dream trip. Initially for themselves, then for others, until they find they can’t stop! A highly entertaining yet poignant animated film about the spirit of optimism and small-scale scams that came into being after 1989.

Pelikan Blue is no a piece of music with spelling mistakes; instead, it’s the carbon paper that was once used to make a copy of the ticket you received as a traveller. It's very simple: if you remove the writing from the ticket, you can enter the details of your dream trip. Then all you have to do is stamp it and put it in the right envelope. Shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain, three young idlers from Hungary hit on the right formula, a mixture of Domestos and other cleaning products, which allows them to forge the tickets for their dream trip across Europe. And later another one for a good friend, and another friend, and then again for the first friend's girlfriend; before long it has evolved into a real business. And yet the police are already on their trail. A suspense-packed work featuring a dark, sometimes laconic, humour, this animated film tells a tale of three friends and a society in transition.
