The Gladhouse is the youth / culture / center in Cottbus.
Every year in November, the large event room of the Gladhouse becomes a cinema hall. In addition, the FilmFestival Cottbus is a guest in the OBENKINO, the cinema in the youth center.
The building complex was built by the citizens of Cottbus in the middle of the 19th century as a citizens' casino. In contrast to a gambling casino, the house was used for festive occasions of all kinds, it was eaten, drunk, celebrated, the ladies had separate rooms for cultivated conversation and card games. During the 1st World War the house served as an emergency hospital. After the Second World War, the Clubhouse of Youth was established, a municipal house with dance events and all kinds of circles for folk-art activities of young people. On New Year's Eve 1989, there must have been an explosion of the central coal heating system, as a result of which the house could no longer be heated and seemingly inevitably faced decay. Through the commitment of an employee in the city's cultural department, new people were sought and found, the roof was completely renewed, a district heating connection was installed, and in the spring of 1990, operations were resumed as the Glad-House youth cultural center, an independent enterprise of the city of Cottbus. The first sustainable renovation work at the end of the 90s benefited the front building and led to the final home for the Obenkino.
Then, however, it took another 10 years before the entire outer shell could be renovated from 2010 onwards, and later also the office wing, which houses the P12 cultural workshop, among other things. Barrier-free access, fire and noise protection, ventilation systems, a computer network, a modern catering kitchen, a chic new courtyard and state-of-the-art event technology - all this has been achieved in recent years thanks to support from the EU, the federal government, the state and the city, making the Glad House fit for the years and decades to come.
Accessibility: disabled parking in the courtyard, barrier-free access, disabled toilet.
