NEUIGKEITEN AUS LAPPLAND

THE MISSILE

Miia Tervo
FI/EE, 2024, 114 Min

In 1984, single mother and inexperienced reporter Niina lands in the same Lapland region as a Soviet missile that has crashed. In the midst of the resulting international media hype, Finnish military experts and indifferent locals, she tries to warn people of an impending nuclear catastrophe. A warm-hearted farce from icy Lapland.

Niina is actually only working for the small-scale newspaper ‘Lappland News’, with its staff of three people, to pay off the damage caused to a broken window. And all she actually wanted was to go to her sister’s wedding. Yet as luck would have it, the opportunity suddenly arises, back in her family’s homeland, to finally report on a story of importance. It’s not only the taciturn locals and the officers who sabotage her investigations that stand in her way however. She also has to contend with a nagging aunt and her demented father. And then her violent ex-husband, only recently released from prison, shows up. Only Kai, a fighter pilot and attentive listener, gives her support; on top of that, he also happens to be in direct contact with the military authorities. Amongst the awe-inspiring landscape shots and moments, especially adapted to the climate, of dry humour, the film tells the story of a woman who must learn to set her own boundaries in her search for the truth.
