Saulė, a lively singleton living in a shared apartment, and Ona, a reserved single mother, struggle to make ends meet with their work in the canteen of their ill-tempered boss. One evening, after seeing a TV commercial for the cooking show ‘Let’s cook Lithuanian’, Saulė has a brilliant idea: she convinces her best friend to join her in taking part in the show. During the application process, she fabricates her work history – and initially things go well. While however the extroverted Ona finds ever greater pleasure in the attention she receives as a TV personality, Saulė feels let down and betrayed by her friend. Emotions run high and their friendship begins to crumble, as does their deceit and the glamour of TV. And the upcoming finale of the show comes at a most inopportune of moments. In TASTY, director Eglė Vertelytė conjures up a perfect recipe of subtle jokes, pithy humour, a series of misunderstandings, jealousy, manipulation and forgiveness. In doing so, she serves up a culinary look behind the scenes, and illusory world, of television. And also tells the story of a true friendship that sees itself as both a parodistic homage to Lithuanian cuisine as well as to the numerous cooking shows on TV.
