Druya

Druya

Ilja Bazhko
Belarus, Poland, 2016, 13 Min

A church through the ages. On the River Dzvina lies the idyllic hamlet of Druya. The village of Piedruya, located on the opposite river bank, is already on Latvian soil and therefore belongs to the European Union. In Druya a Catholic church built in the 17th century is considered to be the main attraction.

The time-lapse perspective gives us an idea of the world historical events that shaped both Druya and its surrounding regions over the centuries. The disputed territory has belonged, at one time or another, to a number of states and empires. The church and its adjoining buildings last suffered significant damage as a result of an aerial bombardment during the Second World War. Restoration work began only after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and this documentary accompanies not only the process, but also the optimistic locals and the stoic tenacity and perseverance with which they apply themselves, thus representing an important contemporary document.
