“It’s a manual on how to use love”, these are the words with which Michalina Wisłoka describes her book on sex and sexuality, the first of its kind in the communist bloc. She personally experienced a number of variations of love, know-how that transformed her into something of a guru on female sexuality. Packaged into a series of amusing anecdotes, the film portrays the bitter reality of communist existence, as well as Wisłoka’s absolute determination to publish her work: not in search of profit, but rather in order to enrich the lives of her fellow citizens. Her commitment exemplifies how arduous the road to enlightenment and emancipation was, as well as the amount of work that remains ahead.
Featuring a remarkable attention to detail and enchanting period costumes, the film not only clearly distinguishes the various stages of Wisłoka’s life, but also Poland’s post-war evolution. A moving story, brought to life by an outstanding performance from the leading actress. DJ
