Protagonist Vasily Goloborodko is a committed and outspoken grammar school teacher. Unexpectedly elected as President after a video of him launching a verbal attack on the Ukraine's politicians goes viral, he sets about defeating corruption only to come up against the all-encompassing power of the country's oligarchs. And yet he stumbles upon a remarkable adviser in the form of a former Prime Minister, now imprisoned on charges of corruption and abuse of office. He knows the workings of the oligarchs and has an idea of how they might be tamed. With its striking, almost cartoon-like humour, the film represents an interesting take on how a popular movement might serve as a counterweight to the abuse of political power.

SLUGA NARODA is based on a successful YouTube series of the same name, which has generated nine million views to date and is available to viewers on Netflix. So successful has the series proved that remake rights were recently purchased by Fox Studios. WMH
