Rather than use his surname, he signed all of his works with the linden leave, an object of great symbolic importance for the Sorbs. “Every Sorbian child knows that Master Nowak-Neumann is the creator of all well-intentioned dwarfs and kobolds” states the film, dubbed in both German and Sorbian in order to familiarize audiences in East Germany with the artist’s work, even though his drawings were by then already well-known to practically every child across the GDR. An affectionate portrait of an artist whose images of bulbous-nosed Sorbian legends shaped the imaginations of generations of children, presented to younger audiences with the help of an animated kobold.
