Trailer
As if they were animals these daughters of reindeer breeders are measured and examined by diligent race researchers. Those who speak Sami are punished, with every blow a reminder that the Sami are an inferior people; the racial prejudice infecting even her fellow peers. Talented Elle Marja wants to make something of her life however and thus she escapes, reinvents herself and falls in love with a Swede, all in complete denial of her own identity. It’s only with age that she returns to her roots.
Swedish-Sami director Amanda Kernell narrates here a little-known chapter of indigenous history, not dissimilar to the fate that befell the Sorbs. A distinguished debut production that stands out with its disturbing atmosphere, as well as the performance of the young leading actress, whose still introverted gaze won’t be forgotten by audiences in a hurry.
