This isn’t the first time the Beksińskis have featured at the FilmFestival Cottbus: the 26th festival edition saw a screening of OSTATNIA RODZINA/THE LAST FAMILY, which stood out with its first-hand impressions from the life of the artist’s family. For this documentary film director Marcin Borchardt draws upon a wealth of authentic film and audio recordings, the majority of which were sourced from the artist’s private archive. Particularly profound is the portrayal of the relationship between father Zdzisław and son Tomek, the latter a radio DJ renowned for having introduced Polish listeners to the New Wave sound of the eighties. Borchardt’s narrative is brutally honest, as he refuses to gloss over Zdzisław's murder and Tomek’s lifelong troubles: the film indeed causes a stir from the beginning in broaching the issue of the son’s suicide, and it is perhaps this very introduction, artful as it is, which enables the evolution of such a special relationship between audience and material.
