First priority goes to the family, after which comes religion and right at the end you have participation in politics: a voice reads out statistics, classified advertisements and various announcements. All the while we witness breathtaking countryside views, proud owners of houses and cars, folk festivals and religious processions. Staged, documentary and historical images, placed side-to-side with the film's soundtrack, the latter composed for the film itself, result in a cinematic/musical collage which speaks of impotence, national pride, anxiety and disappointment. In the process “Polishness” manifests itself in the form of patriotic symbols, Christian rituals and memories of a tranquil childhood.
Ably assisted by composer Artur Zagajewski and editor Dorota Wardęszkiewicz documentary filmmaker Piotr Stasik has created a dense work of cinematic art which, in light of current nationalist and traditionalist tendencies in Polish society, could hardly be of greater relevance. TB
