Posledniy Moskvich

The Last Muscovite

Alexander Fomin
Russia, 2016, 26 Min

A satirical mockumentary on the effects of urbanisation: as part of a report on the Russian capital aspiring TV journalist Anna interviews Alexey, the last fourth generation Muscovite, in this reflection on the disappearance of the Moscow of old, as well as its newly-arrived and long-term residents, that expresses sharp criticism of politics and society alike.

VGIK - Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography

The constant influx of people, uncompromising modernisation, demographic change; symptoms displayed by practically every major city, often to the displeasure of its long-term residents. As of the early nineties Moscow has evolved into one of the world's most expensive cities with its exorbitant rents, lack of space and growing schism between rich and poor. Yet in the imaginations of the city's inhabitants change occurs at a far slower speed.

On Anna's walks with Alexey we catch a glimpse of the few remaining gems his neighbourhood has to offer: historical villas, memorials of times past, as well as places famous Russian thinkers and warriors called home. Looking around at the neighbouring high-rise buildings the fate of these relics from the past is self-evident. Alexey, a romantic with few ambitions yet a lot of heart, feels similarly antiquated and superfluous; ultimately the farewell from his hometown would appear to be a bittersweet inevitability. Nostalgia alone isn't sufficient to hold back progress. DJ
