Having followed the wishes of his parents and studied economics Duc Viet, alias Dužan Duong, later revises his career plans and enrolls at the FAMU film school, Prague. The success of his first two films MAT GOC (2014) and BO HAI (2017), which feature in this year's FOCUS and U18 YOUTH FILM COMPETITION, provide proof of the success he has experienced after V.I.P. was released. Then there is Jackie, a high-flying web designer in the privileged position of being able to reject lucrative job offers from the States. Fashion photographer Angelina on the other hand has a path to career success come her way in the form of an offer from Vietnam. Yet why should she move there?
Director Lukáš Kokeš skillfully combines snippets from the lives of three second-generation Vietnamese living in Prague. Their stories depart significantly from well-established narratives, exemplifying the manifold identities and motive forces of the Vietnamese diaspora in Europe. DD
