Merry-Go-Round

Ruslan Bratov
Russia, 2017, 13 Min

East European comedy at its best: the bar closes and yet Oleg Maratovich, a burly fellow in his mid-fifties and owner of a local amusement park, isn’t ready to go home yet. Thus he treats himself and his three companions to an adventure that lasts longer than planned.

Shortly before they black out these men would appear to be up for anything: given the world now appears to be turning twice as fast as before, why not go the extra mile and take off. It is thus that Oleg takes his friends on a centrifugal carousel trip that brings more than they bargained for. As the saying goes pride comes before the fall, and it's no different here as the men follow the example of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) in placing their fate in the hands of an untamed machine.

Ruslan Bratov appears to take such pleasure in toying with the bright neon lights of his setting, as well as the lightness of his subject matter, that presumably even Kubrick himself would have enjoyed this minimalist work full of nuanced irony. JG
