Golova. Dva Ukha

Head. Two Ears

Russia, 02017, 78 Min

Time for pastures new! Twenty-five-year-old Ivan lives with his mother in a Russian provincial town. Day in day out he takes care of the family cows, whilst after a day's hard work he fuels his energy drink addiction. One morning a stranger with a flashy car turns up and talks of a job in the city: Ivan doesn't hesitate to take him up on his offer.

Having arrived in the city he is given a fresh change of clothes, dispatched to a barber's and soon looks the part. Then begins an odyssey from bank branch to bank branch, where he follows the same procedure in applying for personal loans. All the while Ivan is nothing more than a pawn in a game who will ultimately be left to carry the can. Abandoned by his "employers" in a McDonald's restaurant, he resolves to make his own way through the urban jungle that now surrounds him and proves remarkably dexterous in the process.

Working on the basis of real events, the director introduces viewers to the protagonist and his story without judgment or condemnation. Rather the focus is on providing a forthright portrayal of a sociopolitical issue of great relevance in contemporary Russia, namely the dreams held by many of a better life in the city and the bitter reality that often becomes thereof. Poetic imagery and soundtrack are juxtaposed with the setting's criminal undertone. MM
