Haunting Japanese songs and high-rise buildings in the morning sun, followed by Nino's thoughts: "the majority of people live in the outer world, only few have discovered their inner selves". This teenager thus devotes his energies exclusively to himself, not to mention the fact that direct social encounters cause him great physical and psychological stress. Nino has a way out however, which he finds hidden behind his camera lens: as a nighttime paparazzo, and later in his darkroom, he would appear to really come into his element, and yet all the while he yearns for intimacy. A chance encounter provides him with the courage to take a chance.
HIKIKOMORI provides an intimate portrait of its introverted hero and captivates the viewer with its visual prowess and references to Japanese culture. JG
