Penned by Franz Fühmann, the story of the bird of many colours narrates the tale of a wonder of nature, which in breaking into song every morning is able to awaken the residents of a children’s home, helping the flowers to blossom and bringing the fountains to life in the process. With this adaptation of the aforementioned literary template, his second production for the DEFA Studio Babelsberg, the director justified his international reputation as a master of children’s film. When searching for a suitably picturesque setting for the film in the early sixties in his home region of eastern Brandenburg, the director came across the then newly-founded Eisenhüttenstadt.
