Grimm’s well-known fairytale of Gold and Pitch Mary is particularly popular among young children. In this adaptation the story is narrated by Herbert Feuerstein and the title role played by Marianne Sägebrecht, whilst the backdrop to the external shots of the house and village of the two dissimilar sisters is provided by the idyllic locality of Lehde in the Spreewald region. Frau Holle’s realm was recreated by a combination of genuine studio settings and computer animations generated according to hand-drawn artwork.
This film kicked off a successful annual series of modern fairy tale adaptations by the German public service broadcaster ARD.
