What is the relationship between democracy and economy? Johanna Ickert investigates this issue using the example of the ways in which the issue of carbon dioxide storage has divided the region of Lusatia and eastern Brandenburg: on the one hand there are the citizens’ action committees, who perceive their home region to be endangered and on the other hand the employees of the energy giant Vattenfall, equally concerned about the future of the region, though with hopes of asserting a significantly different vision. When the jar of the coal conveyor belts sounds and Berlin, shining like a beacon by night, appears on the horizon however it becomes obvious that Energyland is everywhere.
