Action cinema based on the recent history of the west Siberian region of Khanty-Mansiysk. In the mid-thirties Ilya, a member of the indigenous Khanty people, returns to his homeland as a Red Army commander, tasked with enforcing socialism and forced collectivisation along the rivers Ob and Irtysch. The soldiers’ destruction of the shrines of the local shamans provokes a rebellion.
With imagination, tempo and impressive panorama imagery the director transforms the literary template of Russian author Yeremei Aipin’s “Our Lady in the Blood-Splattered Snow” into a work of monumental cinema.
