Andreas Sam, the son of a Jewish Hungarian-Serbian family, is in Vojvodina in search of his family history and, in particular, that of his father who vanished without trace during the Second World War. There childhood memories encounter a present overshadowed by memories of war, persecution, nationalism and ideological dogmas. Instead of providing answers, the Hungarian-Serbian border region provides Sam with ever more questions.

Based on Danilo Kiš’ novel “Peščanik” (“The hourglass”, 1972), the contemplative black and white images reflect a chapter of intentionally neglected history – exemplary for the numerous multi-ethnic regions across Eastern Europe.
