On October 5th 2000 the street protests in Belgrade culminate in a rebellion against the autocratic government of Slobodan Milošević. The period thereafter was one of hopes for greater democratic freedoms, the murder of the Europhile prime minister Zoran Djindjić however was a shock for many Serbs from which the country, at least politically speaking, has yet to recover.
Today, little more than ten years after the revolution, seven young Serbian directors enquire after the “condition humaine” of their society. A society infected by nationalism from the right, cronyism from within and a lack of external mobility. Young adults on a rollercoaster ride of emotions seemingly headed in the wrong direction. Wasn’t this once a country with a bright future, informed by a new vision of society?
Seven artists’ impressions of a society caught between dictatorship and the European Union, war and reconciliation, in transition from the old system to a new world, the nature of which remains unclear. Seven means of concurrently persevering both change and stagnation.
