SUMÉ - MUMISITSINERUP NIPAA

SUMÉ - THE SOUND OF A REVOLUTION

Inuk Silis Høegh
Greenland, Denmark, Norway, 2014, 73 Min

In the nineteen-seventies a handful of young Greenlanders formed the rock group Sumé, which was soon afterwards to storm the local charts with songs written in the island's native tongue. After centuries of marginalisation of the island's native culture, the band became the avant-garde of a movement for national independence.

Sumé's poetic lyrics spoke not only of the disappearance of Greenland villages, but also of the imminent extinction of an entire culture. Crashing beats and a charismatic lead-man managed to get the message across, laying the groundwork for a national consciousness. Making use of archive material and interviews with contemporary witnesses, artist Inuk Silis Høegh tells a no-frills tale full of spirit and encouragement that furthermore reminds us that the disappearance of a language means much more than the loss of mere words.
