This debut feature film from documentary filmmaker and photographer Marjoleine Boonstra conjures up the mythology of the Kyrgyz steppe with the help of spectacular picture composition. On his travels Emo encounters a number of individuals who, despite the challenges of everyday life surrounded by a sparse, cold and yet fascinating landscape, manage to make ends meet as best they can. Capturing sight of tumbleweed, carried by the wind over the dusty plain, he comprehends the secret of the Kurai: everything comes and goes with the winds of time and nobody knows from whence they come, nor whither they lead. You thus have to simply take life as it comes. SwS
