Prior to 1989 Emma and Böbe, two Russian teachers, enjoyed widespread respect and social security. The change of political system renders them superfluous however, as they are deprived of both status and work. Despite attempting to learn English in order to keep a step ahead of the game, their earnings are now so meagre that they're forced to share a single room in a boarding house. In a struggle for survival Emma takes up cleaning, whilst Böbe puts her good looks to use, regardless of the means however all they both yearn for is a dignified, fulfilling life. KF
