Konstantin Vasilyevich Smirnov has made his millions in the USA, whilst his son is a recent Nobel laureate. Thus they both return home, to their homeland in the Russian provinces, where Smirnov's daughter from his first marriage plans to marry. Without further ado Smirnov assumes responsibility for the wedding arrangements; his son however is far more interested in the bride, and thus the storyline takes its course. The film portrays Russia in the nineties as a country of social contrasts which nevertheless had space for dreamers and a belief in fairy tale endings. CR
