Fulldome: The World of Dome-Based Film
Fulldome productions force filmmakers to depart from familiar norms and tread completely new territory. The 360 degree medium, which can be projected onto domes such as that of the Cottbus Planetarium, also requires that the viewer dispenses with beloved viewing habits, since rather than observing from a safe distance, one is placed directly into the heat of the action. An experience which, as opposed to 3D cinema, is genuinely physical. Yet how does a narrative play out within such a format; how does the editing and screen layout work? For nine years now the Fulldome Festival Jena has been grappling with these questions; the selected works featured in this programme section are fine answers. HW
