They obtain fame, adulation and riches whilst the film's director goes beyond the clichés of cheap beats and simple lyrics to give viewers a more nuanced view of disco polo; successfully so, as evidenced by the fact that this, a work based on an often ridiculed music genre, became a box office hit. Produced without state funding and yet rich in film quotes and acting talent, this film proved an instant success with its protagonists the embodiment of the man-of-action ideal. JG
