Jedan dan u Sarajevu

One Day in Sarajevo

Jasmila Žbanić
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, 2015, 59 Min

On June 28th 2014 numerous smart phones and non-professional cameras captured the centenary of the assassination of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand. The result is a patchwork of political opinions, social relations and the lasting consequences of history.

The shots that Gavrilo Princip fired at Franz Ferdinand not only triggered the First World War but also left behind an complex political legacy, evidence of which is visible on the day of this anniversary celebration. Accordingly we observe Austrian monarchists alongside admirers of Princip intertwined with footage of an unemployed artist armed with a water pistol whose sense of humour nobody can relate to. And all of this in a city in which, though the national museum remains closed due to a lack of funding, the local authorities were able to find two million Euros for this gala event. BW
