The orphan Krabat finally finds home again with a family of herdsmen. These people are desperately poor however and there appears to be little chance of Krabat's biggest wish becoming a reality: he dreams of learning to read and write. One night however he is lead by cawing ravens to the black mill. In order to ensure that his dream come true Krabat enters into a fateful pact with the miller, who turns out to be a wicked enchanter... The films is based upon the Sorbian legend of Krabat, taken from “Dürr's collected German fables“ (1918).

Jörg Herrmann - born 1941 in Dresden. Graduated in directing from the HFF Potsdam in 1970. Worked at the DEFA Studio for animated film and founded the animator course of studies at the HFF. Completed doctoral studies of film studies in 1982. The creator of numerous silhouette animations for the GDR TV series Sannmännchen.
