A village in Slovenia. Benoš, son of the estate owner Šimo and a member of the German minority takes home leave from his service in the Wehrmacht whilst war rages around him. Šimo wants to keep hold of the family property, it's not so simple however when Germans and Yugoslavs, Ustaši and partisans, Stalinists and Titoists wage war against one another. The village also suffers a rupture. With particular attention paid to interpersonal tensions the director sketches a latent atmosphere of threat and harassment which constantly threatens to boil over into war.
