The west German yuppie Tim, from Bremen, and his eastern counterpart Ronnie are in fact twins. As infants they were separated after the death of their parents and it's on¬ly in 1985, when Tim takes a school trip to the East, that they encounter each other again, reluctantly exchanging lives in the process. Tim's adventures in the East take centre stage in the film; there he stays with the grumpy Erwin, a photographer who on-ce played pranks on the East German secret police. Michael Gwisdek gives expression to this highly remarkable character. The dou-ble role of Tim/Ronnie is played with a cer-tain rough-edged charm by Tobias Schenke.
