You'd be hard pushed to claim the locals have outgrown the animosity, they simply like a bargain. As a result they grudgingly accept the presence of a dark-skinned fellow citizen in their midst. He in turn skilfully takes advantage of the town's proximity to Poland and the Czech Republic in order to construct a business empire of his own, as he provides the inhabitants of run-down, post-industrial Hoyerswerda with affordable furniture.
Once again Konrad Herrmann displays his eye for a story, this TV production not only narrating the life and times of a remarkable jack of all trades, but also a city incapable of making a break with its troubled past. GL
