The End or Beginning?
Prior to the completion of German reunification the Berlin Wall had already fallen, taking with it the border installations, watch towers and the order to shoot-on-sight. Everyone was now free to enter and explore the so-called “death-strip” (located between the inner and outer walls), which proved to be one of the first impulses of freedom for many. Bärbel Dudeck joined their ranks with her Super 8 camera, a natural reflex for an amateur filmmaker. There was, however, no avoiding a troublesome glance towards the future. KF

Bärbel Dudeck - born 1941 in Halle (Saale), Germany. A trained art teacher, she joined the amateur film studio WBK Berlin in 1976. In 1981, she moved to Rostock, where she became a member of the district film studio Rostock, today called Hanse Film. Since 1990 she has been chairwoman of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s branch of the Federal Association of German Film Authors.
