Trailer
The Austro-Hungarian Empire has collapsed and a political vacuum arises. It is here that the film's bizarre world unfolds as the cosmopolitan city of Bratislava, home to Slovaks, Hungarians and a sizeable Jewish community, is to be renamed Wilson City in honour of the American President and join the United States of America. Only a few days remain until the inauguration ceremony, to be attended personally by Woodrow Wilson, when several people are murdered in the city's Jewish quarter. The White House offers assistance, the case is complicated however, first and foremost by the fact that many of those involved would appear to lead a double existence.
The film harks back to the aesthetics and light-hearted spirit of the criminal comedies that came out of Czechoslovak cinema in the sixties and remain popular to the present day amongst viewers both young and old due to their dark humour and penchant for the absurd. The tale is based on a story by Slovak writer Michal Hvorecký. CF
