It was the “desire to discover an unknown continent of hope” that drove him, a clergyman's son from Upper Lusatia, on his travels around the world: from Görlitz to Dessau, and on to Russia, the Caucasus and Persia. A formative influence was and remained however the artist childhood paintings, full of symbolism, the wonders of the Lusatian countryside and the mythology of Sorbian culture. How do the cultures of bygone times, as well as the subconscious, shape the artistic process?
Questions that Konrad Herrmann raises in this bold, intense montage of fragments of Wehle's art and thoughts. In the absence of answers all that remains are the inner conflicts of an unjustly forgotten artist. GL
