Mockingbird

Gabriel Reyes
Cuba, 2014, 25 Min

During morning roll call a youngster dreams of being free as a bird, swaying his arms alone at sea. Later an elderly gentleman sits motionless in a wheelchair, alone on an abandoned street, only to be encountered by the boy, who takes him on an impromptu excursion across the deserted city.

Bohemia

School begins, the Cuban flag is raised and the children bellow out the national anthem. All the while one youngster dreams of walking alone along the Malecón, Havana's seafront promenade. Full of an urge to escape the cacophony of children's voices, he wants to whistle his own melodies, as he proceeds to sway his arms in a manner akin to the way in which a bird flaps its wings. An elderly man sits alone on a gloomy street, presumably abandoned here, since he wouldn't appear to possess the strength to move any further. The boy proceeds to push him through the dilapidated, mostly abandoned streets: in no position to resist, the elderly man is taken on a night-time journey which offers this unlikely pair a fresh perspective on their common homeland.
