In its heyday the Nueva Isla was a luxury hotel for the Cuban upper classes. The derelict building, meanwhile deserted by its former inhabitants, now serves as nothing more than an asylum for the homeless. These number Jorge, whose skin bears witness to the hardship he has experienced over the years; leading the existence of a Don Quixote-like figure, he knows all the nooks and crannies of the hotel precinct, making up as they do the essence of his parallel existence. With the date of the building's scheduled demolition approaching, Jorge refuses to leave in the firm conviction that the disappearance of the hotel will mark the end of a way of life. WMH
