Nikt nie woła

In the aftermath of the Second World War Poles are resettled, on mass, from East to West. One of these individuals is Bożek, who hopes to live in peace in newly renamed Zielno. On arrival, amongst the chaos at the train station, he makes the acquaintance of Lucyna, a glimmer of hope for the future. Matters aren't so simple however; Bożek is currently on the run, a Home Army resistance fighter who fought against the Nazi German occupier but is now unwilling to take up arms against the “Reds”, a topic that remains much discussed in Poland to the present day. The fear of being caught takes the form of an inner voice which gives Bożek no rest.

With this work director Kazimierz Kutz not only broaches an important chapter in the history of German-Polish relations, but also presents a masterpiece true to the principles of Nouvelle Vague cinema. The black and white imagery, sounds and rhythm of editing, all combined with the film's downbeat backdrop, represent a wonderful symbiosis of acoustics and optics. JG
