Based on Gabriela Zapolska's play “The Morality of Mrs Dulska”, the film transfers the action from the turn of the century to the nineteen-fifties. With his razor-sharp reflections and heightened skills of analysis renowned director Filip Bajon manages to not only expose the moral bankruptcy of bourgeois society, but also takes a critical look at a much-used formula for success in contemporary Polish cinema, namely the psychologisation of the private sphere. The family disputes, which we observe Dulska resolve in the film's many flashbacks with a combination of her commanding tone and penchant for buying silence, are brought back to light by granddaughter Melania's research for a documentary film on her family past. She draws upon the help of a Swiss psychiatrist though she remains, in a manner akin to her well-known ancestor, economical with the truth. Every drama, just as every family, needs its continuity after all.
