Beksiński’s famously dystopian paintings are not the focal point, yet his private life’s dystopic machinations just might also be an inspiration for his art. Haunted with hardcore sexual fantasies, his calm demeanor and intellectual pride are the complete opposite of his son’s Tomasz uncontrollable tantrums, raging emotions, latent mental handicap and suicidal tendencies. Mother Zofia is caught between – always the composed woman re-establishing the fragile balance.
Family life is never sunshine and rainbows, but in retrospect, perhaps the bizarre beauty of it can be found once each member’s vulnerability is acknowledged, namely recorded as a part of history.
Based on the life of Polish painter Beksiński and inspired by the intimate audio and video archives of himself, his wife and son Tomasz that he recorded since the late 1950s, Jan P. Matuszyński’s debut feature film confidently stands as a highly intriguing dramatic chronicle of an outwardly ordinary and privately eccentric family. EY
