Young, beautiful, pregnant, and contented; as her husband will soon return from distant Moscow to their Kyrgyz homeland. Until then she will have to muddle through with her grandmother, for whom she labours as if she were her maidservant. Things are not quite as they seem however and what is common knowledge in the village, remains a secret in her presence. When the women congregate at her grandmother’s to celebrate - headscarves on show and bottles of liquor concealed – it instantly grows silent when she enters the room to serve them. The truth remains hidden, in order to keep up appearances, and tradition.
