The eighties in Bashkortostan, on Europe’s eastern border: the weekly film screening at the Palace of Culture numbers among the highlights of village life. On this occasion the Bollywood film DISCO DANCER is to be shown. The film captures the imagination of the village youth, everyone wants to attend the performance. Entrance costs two eggs; Illnur has only one and yet gives his best to gain entrance to the screening regardless.
DISCO DANCER (1982) drew an estimated total audience of forty to sixty-three million viewers in the former Soviet Union. Born and raised in Bashkortostan, the director combines his homage to this cult film with an affectionate portrait of his home province.
