Das Eismeer ruft

Call Of The Arctic Ocean

Jörg Foth
GDR, 1984, 88 Min
Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen

In 1934 a group of Prague children learn that the SS Chelyuskin has become ice-bound in Arctic Ocean. They resolve to help those shipwrecked and though they never reach Arctic waters, the young expedition members nevertheless gain a great deal of experience along the way. The film is given an added level of depth by genuine documentary footage from the rescue of the Chelyuskin. Based on Alex Wedding's book of the same title, on the event of its première the film was praised by the film magazine Filmdienst as an "ode to tolerance and dreams".
