Son of a family of British migrants, nine-year-old George is abducted by Iroquois Indians with whom he subsequently grows up. Henceforth known as Bluebird, he serves as a point of reference for viewers; from his vantage point they are acquainted with the realistically portrayed Native American culture, are emotionally roped in to his inner conflict vis-à-vis two different ways of life and thus ultimately have the chance to reappraise the way they see the world. With BLUEBIRD one of the DEFA studio's most creative and idiosyncratic directors created a timeless and most remarkable Native American film.
